Google Analytics

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Just got my Google Analytics key yesterday and it has had enough time to gather some stats. I can report that it works and that it looks really cool.

Features include

 • “site overlay”, which shows you a picture of your site so that you can see how many people clicked on each link.
 • bounce rate, which shows which pages generated more visits within your web site
 • Initial Navigation, which shows where people went within your site after their arrival
 • Visitor Loyalty: How many of your visitors have been to your site before?

Many of the features are geared towards sites that carry ads or sell things, so there are a lot of reports with a dollar column.
It does not seem track individuals so that I can say, “visitor from IP address x has been to this site 10 times this month”.

So, in summary, it provides way more data than I need and does so elegantly. It took about a month to get the account after I requested it. I am allowed to track more than one domain, so If anyone wants to plug their site in and check it out, let me know….

line numbers in code

Friday, July 15th, 2005

The PEAR text_highlighter package has some options to show your code with line numbers. Chroder’s code highlighter doesn’t seem to implement this option. When I changed the code to implement it, I found that the numbers don’t line up, depending on the theme in use. I have discovered before that some wordpress themes have trouble with tables. I am testing out the web developer extension in firefox to help debug this problem. here is a screenshot of the extension in use. You can see that the extension puts nice colored boxes around all the page elements. And you can see that the numbers column is offset a little, ruining the effect of having line numbers.

**Update** solved the problem! The web developers extension is indispensable! I used it to edit the CSS of the document ‘on the fly’. That is, I can change the stylesheet in a side browser window and watch my web page change. Here is the result:

I just added the line:

.hl-gutter pre { margin: 0; padding: 0; }

to the .css file

Code Highlighting

Monday, July 11th, 2005

While searching for a way to colorize the code I post here, I found a dizzying array of code-highlighting plugins for wordpress. I tested chroder’s code highlighter, which uses the PEAR text_highlighter package. It isn’t perfect, but it seems good enough for my purposes. It supports css, xml, php, javascript, sql and java among others and I can change the colors it uses by changing the stylesheet. Here is a css example:
#content {
padding-left: 10px;
padding-right: 10px;
padding-top: 10px;
padding-bottom: 10px;
background:#ffffff;
margin:5px 190px 0 190px;
font-size: 1.2em;
width: 380px;
border-left: 1px dashed #cccccc;
border-right: 1px dashed #cccccc;
}

#header {
background:#FAFAFA url(images/top.gif) no-repeat left top;
letter-spacing: 0.2em;
width: 800px;
margin-top:10px;
margin-bottom: 10px;
color: #999;
padding: 0px;
}

#header div {
background:url(images/bottom.gif) no-repeat left bottom;
padding: 15px 10px 15px 15px;
}

#header a {
color: #B54141;
font: normal 230% Tahoma, serif, Palatino;
margin-left: 10px;
text-decoration: none;
color: #333;
}
pretty, huh?
